Personally I've always beleived that the important thing is that if
Valentine's day does have meaning to one party in a relationship, then
the other party respects this and makes sure they have a special day
together! If the commercialisation is an issue then that's fine,
there's no need to spend any money: pick a flower, make a card, go for
a walk together!
Just my opinion :)
