Now this is an amusing coincidence,

for many months I had more than a passing thought to create a public mailing
list tentatively titled P!articoloured O!ffbeat P!honology (abbrevated
[P!O!P!], of course), but my reasonable side prevented me to put this into
effect before the end of the written part of my junior lawyer exams (a
couple of days ago). Today I directed my browser to www.missprint.org as the
most suitable home for such a public mailing list only to find that the
Shalala mailing list has been revived.

Frankly speaking, I was never that fond of the direction that the original
mailing list took as everyone who was a member from the start (let alone,
list "owner") may be able to attest. Having said that, while I would have
chosen a new name, I don't think there is any point in creating my <ehrm>
"own" <shudder> mailing list simultaneously which would be bound to have the
same core of subscribers. Add to this the knowledge that I'd be a rather
fascist list "owner" with almost no leisure time and absolutely no interest
as regards organisational matters.

For now, I'll set aside my personal reservations and wait patiently in the
hope that this forum will be a new and improved version of its predecessor
with devoted listees who make perfect sense. Ta, I already know that I'm
demanding and highbrow, but probably not without reason. §;^D

No intimidation in mind, though, honestly !

I'm aware that this will (initially) only be read by seven folks worldwide,
still I'd like to kick the ball off and talk about P!O!P! music.

Yesterday, I compiled the output of Dolly Mixture, Girls At Our Best and
Grab Grab The Haddock for an acquaintance in Sweden. It was, of course, a
pleasure, to enjoy those stunning girliepop bands from the early Eighties
who, along with The Marine Girls, paved the way for more popular acts such
as The Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh, Heavenly or, more recently, Aislers
Set, literally for the millionth time.

I also attended a show by I Am Kloot (in my hometown Hamburg) and was
pleasantly surprised by the live performance. While the _Natural History_
album is decent, it is certainly not the revelation that NME scribblers
would like it to make. New Acoustic Movement ? Everybody knows that if such
a "movement" ever came into existance, it started way back in 1996 with
Belle And Sebastian and meanwhile found its peek with The Clientele.

I've just finished listening to the _Coming To Terms_ album by Arco, an
introverted and most touching affair which is recommended to the uninitiated
as one of the finest debut albums of last year
(www.dreamyrecords.demon.co.uk). Now my turntable is playing the "Stained
Glass" / "Don't Crush The One You Love" 7" by Tears In X-Ray Eyes, one of
the finest debut *singles* of last year (www.tearsinxrayeyes.com). While I'm
at it, may I also recommend the absolutely beautiful "Slow Girl" 7" by Safe
Home from Holland featuring Ester Sprikkelman (formerly of The Nightblooms)
as my *currently* favourite single (www.sundayrecords.com/safehome) ? If you
like Birdie, you'll find a new love. And how come that the "Songs In A Small
Room" by Fantastic Something weren't issued until very recently ? If they
had released those songs as a couple of singles following the "If She
Doesn't Smile (It'll Rain)" 7" they would have had the (deserved) impact on
the scene back in 1984/5, but instead they released the relatively
dissapointing same-titled album, which in my humble opinion is all but
timeless. And I hoped I'd never have to purchase a release on Siesta Records.

I can't wait for the new album by Sparklehorse (probably not everyone's cup
of tea) and the debut album by Graham both to be released in June, does
anybody know whether Hopkirk & Lee already finished an album ?

End of the monologue, it's your turn !
