Hello kids:
While we're waiting for Mr.Dunbar to recover from what he named once as a
"cheap fags &
booze extravaganza", let me report back the latest 2 shows of that long spanish
tour that
I attended along with miss Nal Townley, who's still in Barcelona.
Well, before those gigs, looks like the Benicassim organizers attended the gig
at the
tanned tin festival, so prepare your bags & footie clothes for the spanish
summer, lads.
Last friday, the Valencia gig took place to celebrate the anniversary of the
promoters &
former record label Tranquilo Niebla, and was precedeed by Enon (I barely know
them), the
spanish band Polar (Galaxie 500 and similar influences for one of the spanish
bands that
should get the attention that Migala gets now) and The Zephyrs, both of them
doing really
good shows.
The Valencia gig started at 00:45, and don't ask me for the set-list, because I
couldn't
get it ! it included all the new stuff commented previously here, and my
highlights were
"let me go home" and "San Francisco song", along with "happy new year" and "I
don't do
crowds". "Eighties fan" had to be started again, what created a slightly tense
situation
on stage , but the gig was really good, with probably 600 people turning up and
with a
great party afterwards, held on Le Club, a curious club with 2 different
ambients, one of
them featured a DJ session from myself for a while, which featured "Age of
consent", of
course, but the tall scottish geek that asked me for it never appeared on the
club ! The
rest of the band stayed there until 7am, when they were asked "kindly" to leave
by the
security staff from the venue.
Carey complained about me playing "too many New Order songs", which is not
true, cause I
ONLY PLAYED ONE, the other djs had 2 more, but it's not my fault. As far as I
can
remember, Tracey-Anne also showed her surprise for the bizarre nature of the
venue while
waiting for a taxi to take us back to the hotel.
The gig in Santa Pola (a small village 20 minutes away from Alicante) took
place in the
Camelot Club, dedicated to indie-pop gigs and parties, but decorated with
middle-aged
stuff that comes back from the days when it was a hard-techno club. The opening
band were
Me Enveneno de Azules, a spanish band combining 80's sarah style with 60's pop
guitar-style,doing quite an excellent gig for those people (like me) who know
them.
The band got on stage at 2:00 am, doing almost the same set-list as the night
before, with
some sound problems, specially some connections that led Carey's keyboard to be
silent for
part of "Happy new year". But those were just details of a really brilliant
gig, much
better than the one of the night before, in my opinion. The crowd (about 300
people) were
really glad to see the band, and they made so much noise that Tracey-Anne told
them before
"suspended from class" that "you will also be if you don't shut up !", but
finally both
crowd and the band seemed to really enjoy the gig, that had its highlight on a
cover of
"Call me" by Chris Montez sung with help of Montse Santalla, the 50% of Elefant
Records
and one of the nicest persons on the world of indie-record labels. Funny to
check 2 girls
isnging that song, specially when Tracey began singing and Montse followed
singing in
spanish.
As I'm afraid that i'm growing old too fast, I couldn't wake up early to have
the final
breakfast with the band (I was staying at the same hotel), so I couldn't say
goodbye
properly. so, thanks to the whole band for the gigs, also to the Elefant people
and hope
to have you back in august, you know where !
Jordi
