Manchester in winter is fantastic.
I can give you the full factory tour.
We start at the site of the Hacienda, remembered not
for Acieeeeed..but for free new order gigs/William
Burroughs reading the final academy documents/the
smiths play to two people and six months later sell it
out and drench the industrial architecture in flowers.
Palatine road used to be smothered in factory posters,
you could see them as you came in from the train
( before you could go direct and had to change at
Bolton )
we used to walk like pilgrims up to Oldham street to
the old factory shop in Affleks arcade and buy badges
and box tapes and posters, just opposite is Dry...and
tho it lost its way pretty quickly..there is still
enough about it to remind you what a good idea it all
was.
Summer doesn't suit cities...dark nights mean exciting
times/adventures. A mist of drizzle... that fine rain
( soaks you through) means good clothes like parkas
and scarves tied round your face hooligan style...none
of the frivolous styles of summer.
Fags are better and make some sort of aesthetic sense
and coffee in a cafe can pass away a freezing day with
more style than a can of pop on a hot one.
Everyone is rushing to get out of the grey and the wet
and into a bar or a shop or a cafe and see
people...congregate and talk
grey skies suit me...
the alternative....... SHORTS!
God Forbid.
