Hi all,

"Lastly, I've been wondering, what happened to Anders
in Oslo after he was put on the guestlist? Did he get
past the bouncers?"
Yes, it's me - Anders in Oslo - and here's the story of my Saturday night:
Okay, I'd mailed the band a week and bit before the gig and asked them if
maybe they could do somthing to get me in. Alasdair said no, not that he
knew of, but we agreed to put me on the guestlist (maybe it would help?),
and he suggested I'd go down to the venue at soundcheck time and pretend I
was an interviewer. That way I'd get in, and if I was lucky, I'd stay in.
And that was my plan as Saturday evening approached... I'd even decided what
webzine I 'wrote' for, and I brought a note book and a pen. And a camera. I
hoped dearly I wouldn't have to interview unprepared, having another guy in
the room believing I was an interviewer. I feared it, so I made some
questions as well.
But things didn't turn out exactly as I planned - the main reason; a tram.
The problem obviously was that it never came. I live about half an hour of
walking from the city centre, by tram - about 7 minutes. Alasdair'd said
that I should show up at around at 6 pm, so I planned to take the 5.51. That
one never showed up, neither did the next, and I was stuck at Disen. Fuck.
When the light blue tram decided it was time to come, it was 6.18, already,
and after a quick jog to Garage, I was there, out of breath, at 6.30. "Hi,
I'm here for an interview with The Clientele". "The Clientele? Oh, I'm sorry
they've gone to eat.". Apparently, they'd done the soundcheck in no time,
and now they ate...
So I spent the next hour or two walking aimlessly into the west. With
Strange Geomtery playing on my discman. It was nice. Then I went back to
Garage.
I was the first one there. I think I got there so early the bouncers hadn't
yet arrived... Anyway, I got in without a single question being asked. I
prefer to think that was because I look like I'm 20, but it might also be
that they were happy anybody showed up at all - that guy from Pavement was
also playing that night. I sat alone there for a while. Then one other guy
came. And later two girls. After a while we realised it was ridiculous for
four people to sit on three tables miles apart, and we introduced ourselves
and talked until the concert started.
The gig was absolutely amazing. It was magical.
I took James' setlist and this is what it said:
- Fear Of Falling
- Five Day Morning
- EMPTY
- Reflections After Jane
- Lamplight
- Spirit
- We Could Walk Together
- I Can't Seem To Make You Mine
- The Violet Hour
- I Had To say This
- I Want You More Than Ever
Encore: Since K Got Over Me
Not that they bothered getting off the stage before the encore. They just
laid down their instruments and then picked them up again before the last
song. "It's ridiculous to get off the stage only to get up again." I agree.
I have two songs to add to James' list though, which I clearly remember
being played:
- Saturday
- Monday's Rain
Ah, Saturday - bliss. It's the most beautiful song there is.
And I could add that I Had To Say This merged into the noisy ending of The
House Always Wins.
There were about 60 (?) people there, and we were more civilised than the
people of Gothenburg. Many of you have complained that people have been
chattering throughout gigs earlier in the UK, but in Oslo that was no
problem - while tuning his guitar towards the end Alasdair exclaimed rather
shocked "I can't believe you can actually hear an unamplified electric
guitar in here!". It was that quiet.
And how exciting isn't this It's Art Dad thingy?!
Take care all,
anders
